Nonprofits, board seats, and self-funded EMBAs

I ran across a surprising story about a student that paid her entire $100k+ EMBA tuition at Kellog out of pocket.  She was working at a non-profit.  What was surprising is post-graduation, she stayed in the non-profit world, but managed to boost her salary enough to make the EMBA a worthwhile investment:  http://www.businessweek.com/magazine/content/05_43/b3956601.htm

A few of my friends, neighbors, and coworkers have board seats at non-profits.  The #1 thing non-profit boards are looking for, I'm told, is the ability to raise money for the organization.

If you want to serve your community via a non-profit board seat, get good at raising money.  For those of you that already have solid fund raising experience, you will be highly sought after.

Operations Manager needed

DataCert has an open position for an Operations Manager.  DataCert is one of the fastest growing companies in Texas.  As you know, companies that are growing quickly tend to be a good career opportunity (stock options / promotions.)  Good luck!

The Dip

Once you start an EMBA, you will hit a wall.  Or, as Seth Goden puts it, the bottom of The Dip.  His book will change the way you think.  It's not a bad idea to pick it up before you start you MBA.  If you've already started graduate school and you don't have time to read it now, put it on your list of things to do before you start your next job search.

proposed case study for economics: immortality

Dr. Aubrey de Grey believes that life-extension medicine will come into being within the next few decades.   He also posits that further advancements in this technology will effectively make humans immortal.  I know this sounds nuts, but check out a video of him at the TED conference making his case here: http://baris.typepad.com/venture_capitalist/2006/10/the_science_of_.html

While Dr. Grey is not a profiteer, the video appears on the blog of a Venture Capitalist, and some of the reader comments claim that the firms selling this technology could set a price based upon the client's net worth.   This was widely discussed in the blogosphere, for example, here.

I would think that economists would have a lot to say about this.

I heart Yodlee

Bank of America partnered with Yodlee to offer (for free) "My Portfolio" with their online banking.  I've been astounded at Yodlee's ability to integrate with virtually every financial service I use, non of which are with BofA.  When I log on to BofA, I see an up-to date personal balance sheet that includes all my cash, brokerage accounts, IRAs, my 401k, credit cards, and even  CapitalGroup's Master Retirement Plan.  I love it.  It keeps track of my frequent flyer miles.  Some people have even been using it to monitor their netflix queues.
